Chutes & Ladders—America's Essential Hospitals CEO to retire; Blue Shield of California taps pharmacy exec

America's Essential Hospitals

Bruce Siegel, M.D., CEO of America's Essential Hospitals (AEH), will retire at the end of 2025, the organization announced.

Siegel spent four decades serving in roles in public service, hospital administration and health policy and advocacy, the AEH said. He's led the AEH and its 300 members since October 2010.

During his tenure at the AEH, Siegel has led the organization's advocacy work around funding for Medicare disproportionate share hospitals, the 340B drug discount program and Medicaid payment gaps.

He also led the AEH's 2013 rebranding and was a critical voice for providers during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the announcement. The AEH did not immediately name a successor.

Blue Shield of California

Blue Shield of California has tapped Matt Gibbs to serve as its senior vice president and chief pharmacy officer.

Gibbs previously held the title of pharmacy transformation leader at Blue Shield, which put him at the forefront of the team's launch of Pharmacy Care Reimagined. As part of that program, the insurer ended its traditional pharmacy benefit management contract and instead is working with multiple firms who provide a specific piece of the pharmacy benefit.

The insurer said that Gibbs has played a critical role in driving down drug costs and improving access to critical medications for its members.

In the new role, Gibbs will focus on continued transformation in pharmacy services through new cost-management models and solutions for members, Blue Shield said.

Intrepid Ascent

Intrepid Ascent has named Danielle Carter as its new CEO.

Carter previously served as the company's vice president of community health transformation. Intrepid Ascent is a consulting firm that collaborates with communities to drive better whole-person health, according to its website.

Carter has worked for Intrepid Ascent for six years, according to the company, and has been a critical player in its growth and development over time. She played a key role in developing its Hub of Expertise and in redesigning services offerings from Intrepid Ascent, according to the announcement.

Former CEO Mark Elson has played a key role in the transition since the beginning of 2024 and will take a seat on Intrepid Ascent's board as well as serve as a senior adviser moving forward.
